{You Can Do Anything...}

I'm quickly learning that I just can't do everything. This move, as exciting as it is, has gotten the best of me and realizing all that I currently have on my plate is extremely overwhelming. I know everything is going to work out in the end - but man am I getting tested. On the positive side - I think I may have found someone who wants to take over my car lease - so yay!!! I've been able to score some free boxes and packing materials (THANK YOU dumpster, MedThink, Patty, Ros, and Tracy) - so yay!!! Tonight is one of the many going away parties my Raleigh peeps have planned for me - so yay!!! And my sister found an apartment that she is going to look at today, with a broker that isn't trying to take every cent we have - so yay!!! Things are already looking up! :-)

{This Small Space: Did You Say No Closet?}

As me and my sister {well mainly my sister as she is already in New York and knows the neighborhoods, and can go see the places live} are looking for apartments, one thing we are coming across is both bedrooms do not have closets. The words "no closet" should be added to the list of ones you cannot say in my presence, because not having a closet in your bedroom is like having a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with no peanut butter, a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch with no milk, a trip to Nordstrom without buying shoes - it just doesn't go together. So as we continue to look for the perfect space, I decided to look for a few ideas for how we can compromise and create a closet that maximizes the small space and allows for enough storage without making your room look cluttered and unkempt.Closet for small space I like this idea of adding floor to ceiling shelving to one of the walls in your bedroom, and hiding all of the clutter {if you know me, you know that clutter makes me nervous and on edge} by adding a floor to ceiling curtain. This could definitely be an option for us. 8 days to go and still homeless.... Jessica Signature

{Exciting News}

I have some very exciting news to announce!!! I have been hinting around for months now that I was "moving to a smaller space", that I've "been on a shopping strike", that I've "sold almost everything I own", and now today I get to tell you why. Are you ready??? I'M MOVING TO NEW YORK CITY IN 9 DAYS!!!!! Over the last several months I have been saving, and planning, and saving, and interviewing, and saving, and selling, and saving to move to New York. While I will miss my Raleigh family tremendously, I know that this move is exactly what is supposed to be happening in my life right now. The moment I decided that New York was where I wanted to move, literally everything has fallen into place. On the day that I made the decision, I prayed and said to God that if this was meant to be and it was His will for me to make this huge life change, to just make it work. And...it just has - minus a few hiccups along the way, and I'm still working out a few more - {ie. selling my car}, but everything has truly fallen into place.

NYC {the pic in the upper left corner is of me and my sisters grabbing a pop-bar treat while I was in New York interviewing. I can't wait to go back and try every flavor}

Why New York, you ask? Well it's a place that I've had on my bucket list since forever, so I get to check it off as a place that I've lived. It is a fantastic career move as the opportunities in my very specific field of advertising are abundant. Content for the blog including decorating the new place, street fashion style, subway stories, blogger meetups, restaurants, bars, flea markets, shops, and much much more will be never ending. And most importantly 2 of my 3 sisters live there and I can hardly contain the excitement of how absolutely amazing it will be living in a city, as adults, with them. Me and one of my sisters are moving in together, and currently we are doing some major apartment hunting trying to find something in the area we want, and most importantly in our price range. Getting an apartment in New York is quite the ordeal - first you have to pay 1st months rent, last months rent, and a broker fee which is typically another months rent or can be up to 15% of a full years rent. See why I've had to stop shopping??? Second is once you find something you like, you have to jump on it right away or you will lose it. There is an apartment we saw, liked, and the next day it was gone. Just like that. You literally have no time to think about it - as I'm quickly learning, New York waits for no one.

In advance, I ask that you be patient with me on the blog. I will update you on every exciting twist and turn. I will share pictures and stories - good and stressful. And I will try and blog daily as I usually do, but in the event I go missing for a day or two - don't worry - I'm probably just buried under boxes and a mile long to do list.

I am so very excited and can't wait to bring you all on my journey. Here we go Peeps...

{This Small Space: Rethinking How You Live}

Now that I’ve basically gotten rid of every piece of furniture I own, it’s time for me to think about how I am going to plan and decorate my next space. Getting rid of your possessions because of the confines of your space is really quite liberating. You don't end up with a closet full of clothes you haven't touched in years or tchotchkes that are just gathering dust. Everything you have in your home is something you decided was worth it, and you start to love it in a whole new way. There is no doubt that square-foot challenged spaces force you to rethink how you live in your space – so here are a few tips that I’ve come by:
this small space {above pic via}

Double-Duty: Every space has a vital purpose (if not two), and that goes for furniture and surfaces as well.

Storage Sympathies: Storage is always an issue, so finding any space that can be utilized is important. Under the bed storage, floor to ceiling shelving, building temporary closets, and furniture choices are all things that will help keep your belongings where they belong.

Keeping Clean: Every home strives to stay tidy and clean, but it is an absolutely necessity in a smaller home. You don't have the extra closet or drawer space to shove things in for one, and any mess that has accumulated is seen from everywhere and is often taking up valuable space.

Creative Decorating: You have to think a bit outside of the box in order to create the style and atmosphere you want without it getting overwhelming. Furniture choices, textures, colors, lighting, flow and layout are that much more important in a space where everything is reflected in each other so closely.

Stop Before You Shop: When you don't have anywhere to store new goodies, you have to really think how important that impulse buy really is. It helps put a completely new pecking order on what you purchase and can ultimately save you loads of money.

Controlling Clutter: Everything should have a home. Finding ways to keep your stuff and your routine organized will keep your space from looking like you're a hoarder.

Let's Entertain: It can be daunting to entertain in a small space and make sure that people are comfortable, but don't let that deter you. Just keep it in mind when you are arranging your home and choosing furniture.

Healthy Communication: Sharing your itty bitty living space with another person can definitely make you work on your communication skills. Additionally, finding ways to have your own private retreat areas when you need alone time is of utmost importance. Jessica Signature

{Food For Thought Tuesday: 5 Things To Do Instead of Eat}

To say that lately I have been under a tremendous amount of stress is an understatement, and over the last couple of weeks I have reverted to my first comfort - food. I'm not proud of it, but what I am proud of is that for the first time in a long time {or like forever} I'm noticing the slippery slope before I get too far down it. So today's post is a guide to 5 things we can do, when stressed, instead of eating. Here we go:

stress eating 1. Read a book or magazine - Take a deep breath, and turn right to the page before the good part of your favorite book. No matter how scary, scandalous, kinky, truebloody or nerdy it might be, it’s bound to pull you in to the point where you forget about how much you wanted that entire bag of salt and pepper kettle chips.

2. Bath and quiet time - Hot water, lots of bubbles, a few candles, and some smooth jazz....say ahhhh...

3. Call a friend -There's nothing like a good friend {or sister} to talk you off the ledge - TRUST ME, I don't know what I would do without both my friends and sisters.

4. Watch reality TV - There's something about watching Emily takes a pool of guys on individual and group dates, or watching Bruce having to watch TV in his bathroom because he doesn't feel apart of the Kardashian family {lol} that instantly draws you into a trance and before you know it hours have gone past and you have forgotten about all your problems.

5. Work out - yes I realize that this should have been #1, but one of the best ways to channel anxiety into something positive for your body is to use it to challenge yourself.Put on a fitness DVD. Go for a run. Take a walk. Go to the gym. Don't eat it up. Burn it up.

Can I get a wooooo-saaaaah...

{I'm on a Journey...}

Morning Peeps! How was your weekend? Mine was very hectic and nonstop, but I was able to get several items on my checklist marked off. The sale on Saturday was much slower than my first one - but I got a lot of buyers from Craigslist that purchased most of my furniture. Yesterday, I got to meet one of the sweetest and most inspiring people I probably will ever meet in my life {she was one of my Craigslist buyers}. She has traveled the world and had such great insight on life, work, and living your passions. I truly felt she was sent to my door on purpose. We ended up talking for about 45 minutes and through our conversation I know that I am on the right path with this journey I am on.journey I still have lots of little stuff left - I have given a lot away to a friend in need, and even more to a few neighbors in need - and still I have stuff left. This just proves that I had way too much stuff, and this adding by subtracting journey that I'm on means I am again on the right track...baby steps...Jessica Signature

{Highs and Lows}

So I agree with the question "how can you live the high life if you do not wear high heels?" - but sometimes a girl just needs some good ol' flats - and I do! Of course I am still within my spending strike, but the moment it lifts - I'm in need of some new stylish flats. Of course when you look for something {and don't have the money to buy it} you always find it.... and go figure - I found several that are on my current wish list:flats {1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6}Jessica Signature

{Work-Life Balance: Does It Exist}

As an avid DesignLoveFest reader, I was inspired by the post on work-life balance and thought I would explore it a little more. To you - in your life - do you feel that you are equally balanced between work and home? I have to admit that I pretty much suck at it. I feel that I am spread so thin that I am not able to give myself fully to any one thing - including myself. I wake up late {because I hate mornings} and rush through my morning routine - taking out Addison, getting myself dressed, breakfast and lunch packed, catching up on current events by listening to the Today show, taking out Addison one last time, and then rushing to work...late...always. My day is filled with meetings, follow-up meetings, meetings to follow-up on the follow-up meetings, and client visits. At the end of the work day, I rush home to take out Addison and get ready to go to the gym. After the gym I shower, eat dinner, catch up on emails, work on the blog, watch a show or two and then off to bed....only to start in all over again, M-F.
balance
So as you can see, like you I'm sure, my days are chugged full - leaving me no time for friends and/or family calls and mostly no time for me and my brain to relax. That leaves the weekends, which usually are equally packed - so I'm thinking it's time for a change. Any suggestions for getting more balance in my life?

{Food For Thought Tuesday: Bitchin Bowl}

Do you ever get tired of eating the same thing? Well today instead of talking about the foods that we shouldn't eat - I thought I would switch it up and share a recipe I found while surfing blogs. I came across the blog Faux Martha and immediately fell in love with the recipe below called the Bitchin' Bowl. It's full of fresh and yummy veggies, brown rice, avocado, and topped with well of course...Bitchin' Sauce. Below you will find the recipe for both Bitches (excuse my french) and it's definitely something I will be making on Sunday to eat for the week: bitchin bowl Bitchin’ Bowl Recipe
1/2 bowl-ish brown rice, cooked
1/2 avocado, diced
2 cherry tomatoes, diced
1 spoonful onion, diced
1 1/2 spoonfuls canned corn, drained
2 spoonfuls canned black beans, drained
2 heaping spoonfuls of bitchin’ sauce

1. Place ingredients in a bowl.
2. Mix.
3. Eat.

Bitchin’ Sauce
makes about 2 cups
3/4 c. + 2 tbsp. water
1/2 c. + 2 tbsp. grapeseed oil
1/2 c. raw almonds
1/4 c. + 2 tbsp. lemon juice, fresh
3 tbsp. nutritional yeast
2 cloves garlic
2 tsp. bragg liquid aminos
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cumin
1/2 tsp. chili powder
1/4 tsp. coriander
1/4 tsp. paprika

1. Place all ingredients in a high-powdered blender (such as a VitaMix). Slowly blend for one minute. Turn the dial up to high, and continue to blend for 1-2 minutes or until smooth and creamy.
2. Store in the refrigerator. Sauce may separate. Stir and it’s as good as new.

Just a little food for thought... Jessica Signature

{A Glimpse of the Weekend}

Whoa - what a weekend!!! The moving sale was a great success. I sold A LOT of stuff, yet I still have quite a bit left. While I said I would never have a yard sale again, I decided to have another sale this Saturday (May 19th) to get rid of the rest of this stuff. As Saturday morning was quite the whirlwind, I promised myself to have some fun and relaxation the rest of the day. So me and my friend Ros went to see The Avengers in 3D and wow was it fantastic...and hilarious. I heard it was going to be good, but I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I thought I would. If you haven't seen it yet - GO! And stay past 2 sets of credits for a few extras. The Avengers After the movies we strolled down to Raleigh Times for a snack, some beers, and a lot of people watching before our dinner reservations were ready. It was graduation night for most of the colleges and we were shocked at how short the girls dresses and skirts were (and how our children, when we have them, would NEVER walk out of the house looking like them). BTW - the homemade chips with blue cheese and scallion dip - delish! chips and dip Finally, we went to Glenwood Grill - and boy oh boy - I can't believe I've been here for 4.5 years and have never been. I got the seafood and grits and while I've had my fair share of shrimp and grits since moving down south - these, by far, were the absolute best. If you live in the Raleigh area, or plan to visit soon, I beg you to try this gem of a restaurant out. shrimp and grits Since I didn't get to do my link lovin on Friday (thank for the 'heads up' readers, lol) here we go: link lovin

- I like this dress - where to find? where to find?

- No link here - just wanted to say - I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL I CAN SHOP AGAIN. For all those that doubted, the shopping strike is still on.

{One Trip Grip Grocery Holder}

How many of you apartment dwellers, like me, try to carry in all of your groceries in just one trip - because taking several trips up and down the stairs just seems way too daunting? For all of the years that I've been looking like the guy in the pic below, oh how I wish I would have thought of this "one trip grip" idea because it's truly a genius idea. {Food For Thought Tuesday: Carbs}

It's no secret - I am completely addicted to french fries, or any food that derives from a potato. If I have a side choice on the menu between fries, salad, or fruit - hands down, never fails, I'm going to pick the fries. BUT I am working to minimize my intake because most carbs (bread, pasta, potatoes, corn) have minimal nutritional value and are quickly converted by your body into sugar. So you may as well eat a cupcake. Instead, try sprouted grain bread, which is a lot easier on your digestion and is packed full of nutrients (and it's actually pretty good). Don't forget that there are healthy carbs (fruits, veggies, whole grains, quinoa, beans, and sweet potatoes) and you should try and pack your diet full of these items on daily basis. This picture below shows how bad carbs affects your body, brain, and most importantly your waistline: check it out - definitely something to think about.carbs carbs 2 Just a little food for thought...

{Everything Must Go}

As you know, I'm planning to move out of my apartment into a smaller space and with that I'm having a sale this Saturday where I plan to get rid of A LOT of stuff. My apartment is full of pillows, art, frames, glassware, decorating accessories, greenery, furniture (dressers, side tables, twin beds, chaise lounge, dining room table and chairs, Crate & Barrel console table, Crate & Barrel side table, chairs, desk, clear ghost chair, and more), 3 sets of lamps, outdoor furniture and decorations, candles, kitchen appliances, new bath towels, shower curtain, jewelry...and MUCH MUCH more.
everything must go
For all of my Raleigh peeps {friends, coworkers, and readers} I would love to see you on Saturday! If by chance you would like to check everything out early, send me an email {japayne3@yahoo.com} and I'll let you know what day and time I'm having the "friends early review".

{Small Space Ideas: New Bedroom Inspiration}

I found this picture over on Pinterest and immediately I fell in love with it and decided I was going to use this pic as inspiration for my next bedroom space. However, as I looked closely to the picture, I realized I already have most of the pieces meaning I don't have to spend a ton in order to get this look. Really the only thing I need is the tufted headboard, shelves, and pendant drum lamp. Excited to get rid of old stuff so I can begin purchasing a few new really nice pieces for my new space {that I'm still searching for...} as I am in the process of improving my life through addition by subtraction {getting rid of the old and only replacing with things which you love}.small space bedroom 1 small space bedroom 2 small space bedroom 3 Jessica Signature
