{February Picks = How Shall I Reward Myself?}

It's the beginning of the month and you know what that means - time for my February Picks:

1 - I tried this J.Crew necklace on last weekend and it laid on my neck like it belonged there. I ended up getting this rhinestone necklace, but the one above is currently on my wish list.

2 - I've been eyeing these stud earrings for quite some time now - is it time for me to purchase?

3 - I'm into the color mint like big time right now. This nail polish (mint candy apple) is currently on backorder, but I can't wait to get it!

4 - This skirt is everything! I tried it on at J.Crew last weekend, and as I mentioned above the rhinestone necklace won, but the outfit possibilities with this skirt are endless!

5 - I don't think I need to add a description for these. All I can say is - these will be on my feet this spring!

6 - Don't you love this tortoise shell iphone case? Yea, me too - lol!

As this is the season of tax returns and bonuses - we all deserve a little reward. Don't you agree? What's on your wish list lately?

{No Payne - No Gain}

Yesterday evening while I was in my bootcamp class {while listening to my trainer yell "come on Payne - get those knees up" "Payne, is that what you call a sprint" "No Payne, No Gain! Right?" - like I haven't heard that before} I was thinking that I need a few new things for the gym. It's time for me to put my nasty over-sized t-shirts to rest and purchase a couple of dry-fit tanks. I also need a new yoga mat strap {the vacuum cleaner ate it last weekend}, some cleaner for my mat as I was looking down and seeing all the sweat that was dripping on it as I was doing squat thrusts and planks, and most importantly I need a watch {sweat-proof} to know how much longer I have until I get to home and of course track my workouts and running times.

When will I start to love the gym? Don't get me wrong, I'm committed to going and have hardly ever missed a class or training session - but I don't love it. My infatuation should have happened by now, right?

It comes around once a year, and it's right around the corner. Instantly detectable from the overwhelming explosion of pink and red in shop windows, the hiked up price tag on a bunch of roses and the sudden inexplicable desire to buy chocolates, balloons, and stuffed animals. The experience may be nauseating to many, but, in my opinion, the perception of Valentine's Day merely being expensive and filled with clichés belongs to those who fail to think outside the heart-shaped box. The truth is, I bear little objection to the holiday, and in fact, embrace and view it as an opportunity to get creative!

{The Perfect Accessory}

Something that I usually never leave the house with, other than earrings and chapstick, are my bangle bracelets. I have a ton of them, but surprise surprise, I'm lacking color. So while shopping at J.Crew I came across all of these lovely and bright colored bangle bracelets, and while I didn't buy one {as I'm working on my impulse spending} I really think I need at least one. There's only a few left online unfortunately, but there are still tons left in the store...at least here in Raleigh. I think I'm going to get the hot pink {4th from the top} and maybe even the skinny royal blue.

While I was sick over the weekend {was sick? I still am. My horrible sore throat turned into a bad cold - and now I'm sneezing, stuffy, and can't breathe - no fun!}, I got to catch up on all of my favorite shows – one being Tori & Dean. On the show Tori is always wearing the cutest kaftans – so I went on the hunt to find some at a somewhat affordable cost without the look of appearing preggo – like Tori.

{Spring Fever}

Now I definitely can't complain because we have had such a mild winter thus far - but in my personal opinion, when Christmas is over, I am ready for Spring! I'm looking forward to be able to wear white bottoms again, and for a little change lots, and lots of color. While shopping last weekend, the stores are definitely getting rid of all the winter items in an effort to make room for the new spring collections. {Another Weekend For The Books}

This morning is back to reality for me as I'm coming down from such a amazing weekend high. As you know, my sister Tara was here to celebrate her birthday weekend, and while she ended up getting pretty sick - we still had a blast. Having her here and then seeing her go makes me further realize how much I dearly miss being near my family. Times like this shouldn't have to be reserved for only a few times a year. Below is a snapshot of our weekend - so many laughs and continued memories:

I purchased the coat located in the middle of the top row on Saturday (after quite a sales pitch from Tara and my friend Ros). It was originally a $570 coat, but was on sale for $230 at Nordstrom. I took it to the register to purchase it, thinking it was $250, and knowing I had $140 in store credit to use towards that amount. However, it rang up for $184 and once using my store credit, I only paid... $57.46!!!!! I literally did a dance right there at the counter. And let me just say - this picture does this coat no justice - it's pretty fab I must say!

Unfortunately (not for a lack of trying) we didn't get to do any of the DIY projects we wanted to. We looked for studs all over Raleigh and couldn't find not even one. Additionally, we couldn't find the right fabric for the scarves, and then once we decided just to use cheap cream scarves from Old Navy, we realized we didn't have fabric paint and didn't feel like going back to the other side of town. Instead, we headed home, watched some TV, ate a few snacks and gave ourselves a mani and pedi using the nail polish you see above.

Tara found lots of good deals - some new sunglasses, a few tops, a lovely fur vest that she got from the Michael Kors outlet for super cheap, and a pair of silver glitter flats to walk around the city in. On top of lots of shopping, we had a lot of good eats, all which we will pay for this week at the gym. Most importantly, we had an amazing time (coughing, sneezing, sore throat, runny nose and all) just being together. We're already planning the next trip - this time me going up to NYC.

Finally, another sister is leaving for a 2 month trip to India this morning, so I'm sending her all my love and praying for safe travels on this trip of a lifetime. Her and her guy are traveling through India for a month, and then she at the beginning of her second month she is traveling alone down to the beach of Goa to get her yoga instructor certification. From time to time through her travels she will be posting updates of her trip on a blog she just started called Steps Through India - so check it out. Bon Voyage Kendra - love you!!!

1. Drop Cam ($199): this is a tiny camera that streams to your iPhone and computer. You can use it for a baby monitor or security camera. Orrrr, to watch your dog!

2. Matchbook ($40): it's the cool factor. I would love to have this setting on my coffee table waiting for me to light all my candles.

3. Crock-Pot Lunch Crock ($25): If you follow me on Facebook, you know that I post a lot of pics of crockpot recipes I make. This would be perfect to take to work with me as it keeps your food warm until you're ready to eat it.

4. Beats headphones by Dr. Dre ($299): high definition isolation headphones. While they are a pretty penny, I would love to have a pair.

5. Apple TV ($99): Thanks to the sales pitch my friend Sharon gave me on this fantastic gadget, I now want one! With a few swipes and taps, everything you see and do on your iOS devices will magically appear on your TV. I was thinking Christmas 2012 - but I think I may be getting this much sooner.

{DIY Projects In The Queue}

So I've created a full itinerary for my sister's birthday this weekend, and on amongst lots of shopping, eating, and drinking, we are going to take most of the day on Sunday to do a little crafting and DIY projects. Below are a few ideas that we've come up with so far:

1. I've been wanting to make this scarf for a while now. I think all I need is some fabric, the right quote, and a little fabric paint. If it turns out - who knows, they may be ending up in the shop!

2. I'm getting a bunch of rope from Restoration Hardwarde (the local store here is closing and lucky me, I have a friend that works there. They are literally getting rid of everything in the store and so far I've gotten tons of rug samples, leather squares, fabric swatches, and loads of ribbon). I love how they style the rope in their store, so I'm going to give it a try this weekend...

3. I love this painting and it seems all you need is a white canvas and some gold leaf - both of which I have...fingers are crossed that they turn out how we want them to...

4. My sister has a pair of black boots, and I have a pair of black flats that we want to adhere studs to...

{Adding In Color}

Color isn't something that I have a lot of in my closet - but I'm trying to do better and branch out of my neutral comfort zone. My sister Tara will be visiting this weekend for her birthday, and of course shopping is on the agenda. As I'm in between sizes right now, it's probably not wise to purchase any pants. But if I happen to find a pair that fits - they're coming home.

{A Necessary Accessory: Scarves}

Over Christmas break it seems all I bought were scarves - in fact I purchased 3. Don't you agree that a scarf can completely make even the plainest outfit work? I literally wear them all the time, and while searching for some new ways to tie them over the weekend, I came across this post over at WWW where you can click through five ways to make your scarf an essential piece this season! The City is my fave.

{Red Wine Braised Short Ribs}

While perusing Pinterest, I came across this recipe and immediately my mouth started to water. Braised short ribs is one of my favorite meals and I can't wait to make this in the crockpot. Who's coming over?

Traditional Red Wine Braised Short Ribs {via}

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon butter
1 large onion, finely diced
3 celery ribs, finely diced
3 carrots, finely diced
3 tablespoons tomato paste
3 tablespoons flour
One 750 ml bottle of red wine (I used a Beaujolais nouveau)
1 cup veal or chicken stock
2.5 pounds bone in beef short ribs
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
salt and pepper

In a large enameled Dutch oven, heat the butter and olive oil. Add the onions, celery and carrot. Cover and cook over moderate heat until slightly softened, about 5 minutes. Uncover and cook until the vegetables are browned, 3 more minutes. Store in the tomato paste and flour. Cook for 1 more minute, stirring constantly. Add the wine and stock and bring to a simmer.

Meanwhile, heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet. Season the ribs on all sides with salt and pepper. Add the to the pan and cook over medium-high heat, turning onto all sides until they are browned, about 15 minutes.

Transfer to the Dutch oven. Partially cover and cook on 350 degrees for 2.5 hours

Transfer the ribs to plate and remove the bones. Strain the sauce into a heatproof measuring cup and skim off the fat. Return the sauce to the Dutch oven and boil until reduced to 2 cups, about 10 minutes. return the meat to the sauce and simmer over low heat until heated through. Serve with mashed potatoes, polenta or buttered noodles.

Crock Pot Braised Short Ribs

2.5 pounds short ribs, seared on all sides (see above)

3 large shallots, diced
2 ribs celery, diced large
2 cloves garlic, minced fine

2 tablespoons tomato paste
2 tablespoons barbecue sauce
One 750 ml bottle of red wine

Place all the ingredients into a large crock pot. Stir gently to combine the tomato paste and barbecue sauce with red wine. Cook on low for 4 hours.

Transfer short ribs to a plate and remove bones. You can strain the sauce and reduce it at this point. I threw mine away because I am only intending to use the meat for a few dishes the next few days and I had extra sauce from the oven ribs.

Amazing right?

{January Picks: Fave Things For The New Year}

It's the beginning of the month {and new year} and you know what that means - time for my January Picks:

1. I purchased a new leopard scarf during the after Christmas sales, and I love it. Every girl should have one!

2. I purchased this burger press from Williams-Sonoma to spice up my turkey burgers. I haven't used it yet but I know it's going to be genius!

3. My sister Laura purchased this sweater Anthro skirt for me, and it fits like a glove. {enter whisper voice here: it's a size M - woohoo}. While it's not available online anymore, the stores still have them and they are 50% off = $25!!!

4. My sister Tara purchased these boots for me for Christmas and I'm obsessed with them. I can run miles in these bad boys!

5. Yep - I'm thinking of getting a tiny heart tattoo. My sister Tara will be here in a couple of weeks and we're thinking of getting one. Now gotta get the other sisters on board!

6. My new mantra - I will be placing this in my office and my house.

{Looking Forward, Looking Back}

As I sit here reflecting on the last year, 2011 was certainly trying. While I had a lot of things occur that tested my faith, patience, and health, in the end, 2011 taught me that optimism and positivity do reign supreme. I believe that, in everything, every day is a chance to reach for something greater and that every moment holds opportunities available to enrich our lives. If life is truly 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it, we essentially have two choices when we wake each morning: we can either be someone who lets difficulty defeat us or be someone who recognizes that it is our attitude, or our passion, that will take us to the next level. I'm blessed to have gone through all I have this year as it has definitely made me stronger and ready to face all the delicious things that are in store for me in 2012. So in preparation - I'm keeping my goals this year pretty simple - take care of my health, my finances, and my spirituality, as I believe everything else will fall into place. So here it goes:

1. Continue on my journey of a healthy life and body by:

- continuing my success with Weight Watchers (tracking what I eat & drinking lots of water)

- continuing my fitness training with my trainer and by running more

- minimizing salt and sugar intake

- eating mainly whole, local, and organic foods

2. Travel more.
I didn't go on a big trip in 2011 as I was still recovering from my 2010 trip to Italy. This year I would like to go on a cruise, and take several weekend trips to NYC and the beach.

3. Spend less. Save more.
While you know I love to shop - this year I'm going to try and be more mindful and less impulsive. The goal is quality over quantity - and a bigger bank account.

4. Exfoliate anything and anyone that isn’t serving a positive purpose in my life.
As I spent several hours in the car over the holidays, I listened to many of Oprah's Life classes. The class that resonated with me the most was the one on Putting Out Positive Energy. I learned that we are all responsible for our own causes and the energy we put into the world. When you do a loving thing, when you put out positive energy, you feel happy. This is how human beings are wired. So the goal is not to put out positive energy in order to get some positive energy back. The goal is to put out positive energy and feel positive about your life. That's where the work is.

5. Push myself past the scary bits more often and not let comfort and complacency hold me back from really exciting places on the horizon.

Another Life class of Oprah's that spoke to me was the one on Stepping Out of the Box. It talked about what keeps you from leaving your comfort zone and how a sense of adventure is really about waking up every day not with a sense of dread but with a sense of possibility. Most of us are extremely fearful about life, we're constantly trying to protect and defend ourselves. This year the goal is to build up my sense of self-reliance and enjoy the possibilities.

I feel so much gratitude for being able to blog. Thank you so much for the support this year and here's to a happy 2012!

Morning Peeps! How was your Christmas? Did Santa bring you everything you asked for? I must admit that Santa was extremely generous to me this year and among the several amazing gifts that I received, I got this weekender bag that I've been eying for quite some time now - I'm obsessed with it. In addition to mounds of gifts under our tree, I got to spend some real quality time with my family - I cherish the time that I get to spend with them as we only get to see each other a few times a year. I've mentioned several times before how me and my sister's compete against each other to see who can create the best Christmas wrapping - so click here to see our finished products. My sister Tara won this year with her leopard print paper, gold glitter ribbon, and huge red bows. Do you agree? So now it's on, time for me to brainstorm so I can take back the title!

So now that Christmas is over - New Year's is right around the corner. Raise your hand if you think New Year's Eve is one of the most overrated holidays of the year? Don't get me wrong, I've always wanted to get super dressed up and go to a New Year's Eve ball to dance the night away until the clock strikes twelve and I receive a kiss to remember - but since at this time it's only a dream, I thought I would put together a perfect recipe for spending New Year's Eve at home:

{On The Road Again}

Hoooray! In a short while – me, my sister, and my puppy will be piling in the car and heading up north to Ohio for Christmas. I have to be honest – with the weather here in NC (60/70s) it really hasn’t felt like Christmas. But I know the moment we step foot in our parents house with everything fully decorated, trees up, presents surrounding the bottom, cookies in the cupboard, and snow on the ground (fingers crossed) – my Christmas cheer will quickly turn around. I’m so looking forward to just getting there already. While I’m away – my posting will be sporadic – so while I promise not to abandon you, I plan to spend every second I can with my family as the last time we were all together was last Christmas.

While quickly looking on Pinterest this morning, my good friend Gab of Vive ut Vivas posted this pic below and I thought it was perfect due to my last couple days. It all started with a Christmas lunch here with my peeps at work, then late night pizza at the office trying to get a final project out the door, and then let's not even talk about what's in store with going home for the holidays tomorrow. This morning a wave of guilt came over me as I've done so well so far, and I certainly don't want to start backsliding into my old habits - but as quickly as the negative thoughts surfaced, a small voice said {via the pic below}.....move on!

Today is going to be another hectic day, night, and early morning at work - and while I'm not excited about it at all, it just means that I'm a little bit closer to stepping away from my life here in Raleigh and traveling up to Ohio. My sister is flying down here from NYC tomorrow evening, we're going to grab some burgers and fries at Chuck's, and then we're gonna have slumber party before we head on the road Thursday morning. So while today is not going to be fun, I have something fantastic to look forward to - to get me through it.

{It's All About The Packaging}

Within this post I was supposed to include a picture of the wrapping I'm doing this Christmas - but based on my post from yesterday (work is mad crazy) I haven't had time to do any wrapping. So until the weekend - I'll leave you with a few creative ideas for your Christmas wrapping this year:

- You know me and stripes - so of course I scoured the net trying to find this exact wrapping, and I found it here, but then ended up going with the packaging that I will show you next week.

- I love everything about that patent black wrapping paper above with the gold and fuchsia ribbon and charmed brooch - I'm telling you if I got a package that looked like this, I wouldn't want to open it - so vintage-y!

{Are You Ready For Christmas?}

Things at work are extremely hectic right now, and while it only happens a couple times a year, I must admit the timing this time around could not be worse. It's Christmastime and we all have shopping to do, cookies to bake, and gifts to wrap {not to mention a body I'm trying to get in shape}. I'm kind of drowning in a to-do list that's a mile long {we all are}, but I know somehow it will all get done. Have I mentioned how much I'm looking forward not only to the weekend, but the long vacation I get to take starting next Wednesday? In the meantime, while at work, by trying to remain in the holiday spirit, I'll sip non-fat chai tea lattes in those fun little red Starbucks cups, stream Christmas tunes on my Pandora, and try not to think about all that needs to be done.

How close are you to being fully prepared for Christmas?

{Blogger's Block}

So if you're a blogger reading this you'll understand {and maybe you will understand even if you aren't a blogger} but this morning after writing over 500 posts to date, I'm coming up with a big. fat. blank. I think I'm having a case of blogger's-block? I thought to myself - it's Christmas! Talk about Christmas! Nope. Nothing. It's holiday party time, talk about what to wear! Nada. This is the season of eating - post something delicious to make! Did that yesterday. So today - please forgive me as my brain won't allow me to think of anything brilliant to post about. If you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth {what movie did that come from? lol} - stand up and speak out. How can I get out of this writer's block?

Tomorrow I promise {at least I hope to promise} to shake this blogger's block and be back to normal. Until then - I'll be scouring for inspiration. Enjoy your day peeps!

While my family wasn't wealthy, I realize that I was very lucky when I was growing up. I had a stable family life with parents who supported me and my sisters, financially and emotionally. There was food on the table {and we always ate together}, we never wanted for anything, we had lots of toys, nice clothes, we were encouraged to do well in school because "the key to an education is to train the will and the mind to do the right thing at the right time" {my mother recited this to us all the time}, and we were taught that it was important to be involved and give back to the community - poverty was not a part of our lives or the lives of anyone we knew. But the truth is, most people aren't nearly that fortunate. As we go into this holiday season, I thought that it was important to talk about how we can give back to those who are less fortunate. Below are a few simple ways to how we can make a stranger smile and know that someone out there cares...

Well it's close enough to the beginning of the month - so you know what that means....it's time for my December picks. This month I thought it was appropriate to share with you my favorite 6 items from my personal Christmas list. Yes I am {clearing throat} years old, and yes me and my sisters are still required to submit lists to Santa {simply because my parents don't have any grandchildren yet, so the focus is still on us, and we're ok with that}. 1. Customized iPhone case. You pick the design, the colors, and what you would like to have written on it. I'm going for the grey chevron with Jessica written in black. You like?

2. Dwell studio gold urchin. I love this little guy - and while it's sold out on the Dwell site, Jamie over at Furbish has them in her store. Score!

3. I've blogged about this Kate Spade weekender bag several times before. This weekend, it went on sale and I sent the message to one of Santa's elves to make sure he gets the memo.

4. American Fashion Designers at Home book. You know I love coffee table books, and you know I love fashion and interiors - so duh....perfect!

5. Ice cream maker. I would say this is my top item on the list. I have big plans for making low cal/low fat recipes - I'm obsessed with ice cream, so I'm dying to make my own.

6. Don't you love this shuguh {sugar} bowl. Super cheap and super cute. It's mine.

{Christmas Wreath Gift Cards}

Good Morning Peeps! Let me just say - I am exhausted after the 9-hour drive yesterday. How was your Thanksiving? Mine was fantastic - and while I did indulge as I planned, I think overall I made it through the holiday successfully. I wasn't brave enough to go weigh in on Saturday, so I have a few more days to shed all of the macaroni and cheese, stuffing, and cranberry/pear sauce that I devoured over the weekend. In addition to all the eats - Black Friday was also a success. We were at Target at midnight - then headed over to Best Buy and then Macy's. Went home to take a "nap" and then went back out around 9:30 am and didn't come home until 9:30 pm. If you thought I was a shopaholic - you must meet my mother! Nevertheless, we had a blast and most of her shopping is done. So now the fun begins - I love turning into a kid for a month. {On The Road Again}

Morning Peeps! In just a few minutes, me and Addy will be hittin' the road for a 9-hour trip up to Ohio for Thanksgiving. I'm super excited because I haven't been home in a while and I'm ready for some quality time with the fam. Once we get home I'll probably take a little nap to recoup from the trip, and then I'll be helping mom in the kitchen with the last bit of dinner preparations for tomorrow. After that, I plan to sit back with a glass of wine, kick my feet up, and just enjoy being at home.

I recently received a magazine in the mail from Fossil - and when I saw it I thought "Fossil?? How did I get on the mailing list for Fossil? They sell watches, right?" WRONG! I started flipping through the pages and after several ooohs and ahhhs, I landed on these boots {shown below}, and I said "oh I'm so getting those" and went online to purchase them. It was literally love at first sight, and yesterday when I received them, I love them just as much {if not more} in person. They are the perfect height, sooo comfortable, and let's just say, for those that see me often - I apologize in advance because I will be wearing these all the time - so I don't want to hear you say "dang, she's wearing those again?" - k? Can you believe that Thanksgiving is next week? Although as I was strolling through the mall this weekend, they would like to make you think that Christmas is actually next week. I love Nordstrom's stance on decorating for the holidays - "At Nordstrom, we won’t be decking our halls until Friday, November 28. Why? Well, we just like the idea of celebrating one holiday at a time" - don't you wish all stores would do this? When I enter the Nordstrom shoe department, I immediately ask for David. Let's just say he's my shoe therapist. He knows my taste, and knows what to bring out without me having to specifically tell him. This past weekend, after my binge, he told me that he is personally going to submit my name to be on the invite list for the annual exclusive Nordstrom Christmas party. Say what??? I've been dying to get invited to the party for years, and now I may be going! Crossing fingers that I'll actually get an invite! Needless to say, my therapy helped and now I'm ready to face another week.

{Vanilla, Pear, and Vodka Cocktail}

Doesn't this drink look refreshing?? Over the weekend, while in New York, my sister made me a pear martini that was to die for (I ended up having several). When I got back to the office on Tuesday, one of our clients sent us a box full of delicious Harry & David pears. And then when I went to Pinterest last night, one of the first pins I saw was this recipe for a Vanilla, Pear, and Vodka Cocktail. So as confirmations usually come in three's - I would say that the stars have aligned for me to make and indulge in this drink this weekend. I've got the vodka - check. I've got the pears - check. Now all I need are some vanilla beans which I'll get tomorrow, and viola. Mmmmm....can't wait!

And just for kicks - here's another recipe I found - amazeballs, right??? This is definitely in the queue...and of course I'll have to Weight Watcher-ize it (as in low fat cheeses, 2% milk (I just can't do skim), turkey sausage, and wheat pizza dough) and then figure out how many points+ it will be... it will be worth the work!

Morning Peeps!!! I had a fantastic time in NYC this weekend and am still trying to recover from the busy busy weekend. New York has such an amazing energy, and in 3 days there was no way that we were able see everything, spend time in every neighborhood, go to every shop, and eat at all of our favorite restaurants - it just proves that I need to visit more often...and now that I have 2 sisters living there, I'll be there a lot more frequently. One thing that was hard as I was preparing for my trip - was trying to pack for 50 degree weather, in a carry-on because I wasn't paying extra for my luggage. There are three items that I would like to find while roaming the streets of New York this weekend: 1. leather {faux-leather} pants, 2. shoes/boots, and 3. sequin top and/or clutch. All of these items shouldn't be hard to find - I will just have to decide how much I want to spend on them. Some people have asked me "where would you wear sequin other than at a Christmas party or New Year's Eve?" And my answer to that is EVERYWHERE - the grocery store, out for a day of shopping, out to dinner... For day time limit sequins to a top, like a tank or embellished cardigan or sweater. Off set the texture of sequins with jeans or a chambray shirt or cotton to balance out an outfit. Accessorize minimally to avoid an outfit looking too busy. Sequins at work, you say? Yes, you can totally wear sequins at the office - it’s all in how you wear them. Choose a smaller size sequin in a neutral color to minimize their flashy reflective appearance. Some come in a matte plastic instead of ultra shiny and iridescent that still provides texture to an outfit minus the flash.

Be bold - be different - and if people stare...let them - consider it as you're being noticed! Shine on!

In my quest to a healthy body and life, I'm learning to eat to live, rather than live to eat. It wasn't an easy task at first, but I'm slowly making the transition. But if I can contradict myself for a quick second and ask - what about the pictures below don't make you want to cozy up and indulge in a huge bowl of tomato soup with grilled cheese croutons? One of the reasons people following a weight loss plan 'cheat' is because they feel deprived of their favorite foods. So I say - eat that tomato soup, eat those grilled cheese croutons - just watch your portions and make sure that your splurges only happen every once in a while. I saw a quote on pinterest that said "do not reward yourself with food - you are not a dog" - right? lol!!!

Gratitude is a virtue that everyone should cultivate, yet gratitude means nothing if you haven't mastered the art of expressing it. Are you more of a verbal/email thank you-er, or are you like me and think that hand-written notes are the best?

Maybe the question should be - when do you think it's appropriate to write a thank you note?

- When you receive a gift

- When someone performs an act of service for you

- When someone goes above and beyond what is asked of them, whether at work or in friendship

- After a job interview

- When someone has you over for dinner

- Anytime someone does something that warms your heart

- There's never a wrong time to write one

Ground rules:

- Write the note as soon as possible (within 2 weeks of attending the event or receiving the gift)

- Send it via snail mail - while emails are certainly convenient, sending a thank you note through the mail shows effort

The anniversary issue of Rue is currently available, and while I was planning to wait and read it this weekend, I have to dive right in and view it the moment it went live. This by far is my favorite issue to date - it honestly has something for everyone - home decor, fashion, food, gift ideas, amazing photography, my favorite spread No Particular Place To Go (starting on page 90 and below) and to place the cherry on top of the icing on top of the cake - a home tour (starting on page 119) of Rue's Chief Editor Crystal Gentilello - just you wait!

{Inspiration Is Everywhere}

If you can put together an outfit, you can decorate a room, and vice versa. For example {as seen below}, find a piece of art that inspires you and find a top that resembles it. Pair it with a great pair of jeans*, throw on a necklace and viola.

Does it not seem that easy to you? Well take a look around your house. What colors do you see? What patterns? As I'm sitting here writing this post, I'm looking around and realizing how much my apartment looks exactly like my wardrobe - lots of neutrals with a hint of color here and there, very little pattern. Look around - does your home resemble how you dress?

*I've been wanting a pair of Raleigh Denim jeans because - well duh - I live in Raleigh currently and I love supporting local businesses. Oooooo - aren't these pretty? I saw these over at Design Love Fest yesterday and immediately was drawn to how girly and frilly this lingerie is. I have to be honest, my go to night-time outfit usually consists of an old high school cheerleading t-shirt (yes I was a cheerleader...and a gymnast) and a pair of basketball shorts, but these really make me feel like maybe I should step up my game!

{A Personal Reflection: My Healthy Life Journey}

If you follow me on Facebook, you know this past weekend I gained 1.4 pounds and was devastated (and even shed a tear - which took my leader by surprise). I have really made a commitment to eating healthy, drinking 8+ glasses of water daily, minimizing carbs, increasing fruits/veggies/protein, exercising 5 times a week - and to do all of that, not cheat once, and gain weight - it was almost like a slap in the face of all of my hard work.

The first thing that I wanted to do right after my WW* meeting was to go and eat something really good - which meant something that was awful and full of carbs, fat, and cheese. THAT (eating) was exactly how I used to deal with stress, disappointment, loneliness, happiness, to be honest - all emotions. After some thought (while sitting in the WW parking lot) and weighing the pros and cons of me having a pig-out fest, I opted to go home and take an extremely long power walk with Addison. The walk did me a lot of good, and allowed my mind to get back "in the game". Once we returned home from the walk, I cooked a healthy meal - TBLETC (turkey bacon, lettuce, fried egg white, tomato, low fat cheese sandwhich) with a fruit salad that equaled 6 WW points+ (vs. the 30+ points the Five Guys burger and fries would have cost me) and I felt good....and strong...and in control.

As much as I wanted to quit after my meeting on Saturday, I know I have grown because I didn't allow this small setback to keep me from moving forward. This week, I will continue to do everything that I've been doing and hopefully this Saturday I will see a loss on the scale. Moving forward, while the scale number is important to me - I will focus on inches lost, and my continued strength in my workouts...eventually, I'll see results - at least that is way they say (and in my heart I know this is true)...

Thanks for listening and THANK YOU for all of the encouragement - it truly keeps me going. While I don't plan to turn this blog into a weight loss blog, by keeping you up to date on my journey helps keep me accountable (I hope you don't mind) - next up: my before pic (yikes)!

Here are a few variations on this chic look:

For a menswear-inspired look, wear a cotton bow tie blouse with a skinny jean paired another one of the season's must-have items: the long boyfriend blazer.

Work the transparent fashion trend by wearing a sheer bow tie blouse with a pair of skinny or even a pair high-rise wide-leg jeans or trousers, and finish it off with a slim-fitting cropped blazer or faux fur vest.

Look for blouses in solid colors, tiny polka-dots or other small prints. Steer clear of large, busy patterns; the bow tie is embellishment enough.

Cheat the Trend

For the look-for-less: fake the bow tie blouse look by wearing an button-up blouse and tying a coordinating silky scarf (or thick ribbon) loosely around your neck in a knot or bow. Voila! – now you've got a faux-tie blouse!

Over the weekend while looking through the Sweet Paul Fall online magazine, I came across a spread that was dedicated to avocados and once I spotted this pizza - I was sold. I'm obsessed with avocado, and while they are a little higher in points for me, it's something that I work into my diet because of the health benefits (an avocado has 60% more potassium than a banana) and simply because they are oh so delicious (especially when they are ripe)...

For those that have been following me for a while, you know I'm on a path to healthy eating and living. I've been trying to get creative when it comes to food because we can easily get caught up in eating the same thing over and over again because it's safe. Below are a few of my current favorite treats - they are so good that I thought I would share with you:

1. Pancake mix - the best homemade pancakes I've ever made. Add a couple pieces of turkey bacon, and a side of blueberries and strawberries and you'll have one yummy breakfast.
2. These ice cream sandwiches are full proof - the perfect sweet and refreshing ending to the day.
3. BLT lettuce wraps - you are going to love them!

{Wedge Into the Fall}

Yesterday I went to my mailbox after receiving a personal letter from the mailman to empty out my box or he will take everything to the local post office and I can pick it up there (I immediately said "whatever, you can take it to the stupid post office, there's nothing in there but junk anyway - but then I remembered and said "wait, it's the beginning of the month, I bet all my magazines have arrived"). So after not being appreciative of being told what to do, I walked over to my mailbox and yep, I was right - a mother-load of magazines were jam packed inside - and yep the mailman was right - he "couldn't even fit a postcard inside" - ooops, lol.

Last night I spent the evening looking through all of the magazines (while saving 3 WW points to enjoy a glass of wine) and the one theme throughout them all was Fall Trends. So today I thought I would gather all my findings and give you what are considered the must-haves for the upcoming season. Is there a trend that you are particualary excited about for the Fall? Or one you could do without?

Morning Peeps! Did you miss me? I had a great time in Ohio this past weekend - time away relaxing with the family was exactly what I needed. The long weekend wasn't long enough {it never is} but the dose of the fam that I received has given me enough to get me to Thanksgiving. I never fully understand how much I truly miss them until I spend time with them, and then have to leave again. For those of you that have family within a short driving distance, don't take it for granted - visit them often.

So...it's the beginning of the month and you know what that means - time for my September Picks!

1. I would die to have this exact cognac leather coat - but because it's way out of my price range, I'm on the hunt for something similar...

2. I love this little guy by Jonathan Adler - I first saw it over a year ago, and not quite sure why I haven't purchased it yet. I love the whimsy Mr. Adler brings to interiors...

3. Next month {October 8} is my birthday and I've been trying to decide what I am going to purchase for myself. I really really want these Tory Burch boots - and I've been keeping my eye on this Kate Spade bracelet, and this Emersonmade gold necklace. I think I'm going to go with the boots...I only turn thirty-something once, right?

4. Loving this leopard print skinny belt from Banana Republic

5. I would do anything for this ring...I love the vintage-classic feel. I'd wear it everyday...

6. I'm kind of obsessed with finding a pair of black leather pants. These are from Gap, $400, and that absolutely means I need to keep looking....the look for less will pop up sooner or later.

Pinterest is 1. a virtual pinboard, 2. an inspirational board comprised of collections of favorite inspiration in the form of photos and imagery, and 3. a place to waste a lot of time (lol) - and I'm addicted. You know how you used to cut/tear pictures out of a magazine when you liked an idea? Or kept a mental list of places you wanted to visit? Well now Pinterest allows you to digitally capture any and everything that inspires you. Below are a few (out of the personal 1,000+ I've pinned) pins that I'm loving lately:

1. I love this Burberry coat and feel that it would be the BEST birthday present to myself if it wasn't so darn expensive...(pic be found on my 'Get Into My Closet' board)

{Have I Mentioned I Love Food Trucks}

My absolute favorite food in the world is french fries. It's the one thing that I can eat, and eat, and eat, and never get tired of (but as I'm on the road to healthy living, I've learned to control my portion sizes). As you know, I'm a little obsessed with food trucks, and visit them every time I'm in Durham. Click here for a list of all the food trucks (and reviews) available in the Durham, NC area. A dream of mine would be to open my own food truck, a gourmet french fry food truck, with homemade aioli and dipping sauces. It's something that I've been thinking of for quite some time, but not sure where to start...
