{I'm Really Just a T-Shirt and Pajama Pants Girl}

Despite what you typically see me wearing, and what I usually blog and pin about wanting in my closet - I really am just a t-shirt and pajama pants girl. If I could get away with wearing this outfit everyday - I totally would. However, since I can't, I've come up with an outfit that incorporates my love of graphic t-shirts, boyfriend jeans (while they aren't as comfortable and pajama pants, they're next in line), and a great pair of shoes. Check it out: Graphic t shirts {Click to shop: Jacket/Jeans/Zara Heels, Mid-West Tee, Script Ohio Tee, Glasses, Converse} Jessica Signature

{The Beauty and Curse of Pinterest}

I'm OBSESSED with Pinterest {who isn't?} but the one thing that drives me crazy is when you lock your eyes on something and say "I don't care how much it is, I'm buying it" all to end up not finding where you can purchase it from. That's exactly how I feel about these four pairs of shoes below. I honestly don't care how much they are, and I honestly don't care that I'm on a spending strike, if I could find these shoes in my size (8.5) ...I would buy them with the quickness. If by chance you come across where to find them - please leave a comment!Pinterest shoes {*Update I found the peep toe pump....at $560 - maybe I do care how much they are, yikes! The leopard shoes are Alexandar Wang, just can't find them anywhere. I repinned the grey strappy heels a while ago but can't find the source. The brown strappy sandals source is officially m.i.a. - HELP!}Jessica Signature

{Lay Your Head On My Pillow}

Morning Peeps! Man am I tired.... Last night I went out and had a blast with a bunch of friends and while we didn't stay out too late, I'm feeling very sluggish this morning. There's nothing more that I would rather do right now than go back to sleep - hence the reasoning behind this post. Over the years, I have collected a ton of pillows - most of which are now are in a large pile of one of my closets. I will be selling most of them, which means I will need a few new ones. I'm loving the mixture of textures - the fur, leather, sequins....it's all about the accessories right (in fashion and at home).

{Food For Thought Tuesday: The Impact of Pop/Soda}

An apple a day keeps the doctor away and a soda just keeps them in business. Now I may lose many of you on this one, but as I’ve weened myself off of pop, soda, soda pop, whatever you call it {except for when I go to the movies and when I’m at the Nordstrom Cafe – they have the best Cherry Coke} – I thought I would shed a little light on the subject.

Drinking just one soda a day can add up to over 91,000 calories a year. That’s like eating over 300 Big Mac’s or 182 large fries. That’s a lot of empty calories, sodium, sugary corn syrup goo running through your veins. According to the American Beverage Association, the average American drinks an estimated 54 gallons of soda per year. Insane,right?

And don’t think by switching to diet pop…because diet is just as bad. It does all the tricks that regular soda does, but in a very insidious way. Diet sodas are loaded with sugar substitutes. Our bodies are programmed to deal with certain substances in certain ways, but our bodies don’t know what a sugar substitute is. Here is what happens - when you drink a diet soda, your body guesses by the sweet taste that it is ingesting sugar. So your body prepares to process the sugar by releasing extra insulin to deal with the sugar. But…there is no sugar. This causes an excess of insulin floating around in your bloodstream. Too much insulin in your blood stops fat loss and causes weight gain.

The best remedy to this problem is good old water. If you put a little lemon in the water, it tastes nice and has a detoxifying effect on your digestive system and kidneys. Just think of it as a grease buster. In addition to lemon, you could add just a touch of unsweetened cranberry juice to a glass of water for the same effect.

{Imagine Me In This Space}

I came across this picture over at Apartment Therapy over the weekend and was immediately drawn to several things within this space. My next living room {only after changing a few things} is going to be very much inspired by this room....especially the couch, rug, and art placement...love, love, love this space!

{DIY: Polka Dot Colored Jeans}

While visiting Anthro over the weekend I saw these pants and loved them - that is until I saw the price tag. $218 is a bit much for a pair of polka dot jeans so I decided that this would be a great DIY project - and boy did I find the PERFECT look for less. Check it out:

{This Small Space: How To Live In A 258 Square Foot Space}

I could never imagine a way to make 258 square feet into anything but a fantastic closet, but designer Barbara Appolooni found a way to make it into a luxurious apartment equipped with a bathroom, kitchen, dining room, living room, closet, bedroom, and balcony.

Pretty fantastic right? I was especially impressed by the attention to detail and that functionality was never sacrificed. Literally every piece in the space has a purpose and function. So very creative - and not to mention, chic. I've decided not to renew my lease in June and move into a smaller space. While it certainly will be larger than 258 square feet, this video reminds me that small space living just makes sense - have only what you need, and those items that are extras - make them fabulous.

{Food For Thought Tuesday: How to Shop The Grocery Store}

Over the weekend I had to stop and get groceries, and I realized how much my grocery shopping over the last 6+ months has changed. I now realize that the freshest and healthiest foods are all located on the perimeter of the store, and for the most part I avoid the aisles. The foods in the aisles besides things for cooking & baking spices, flour, oils are typically:
  • Junk foods like cookies, candies, chips, and sodas
  • Canned, boxed, or frozen foods which contain preservatives & additives for packaging
  • High-carb pastas and cereals
how to shop the grocery store
When eating clean {choosing fruits, vegetables, and meats that are raised, grown, and sold with minimal processing - often organic, and rarely (if ever) containing additives}the highest quality foods are going to be the fresh versions which again are located in the perimeter of any grocery store. Typically, by the time I finish shopping the perimeter of the grocery store, my basket is pretty much full of all I need. Don't get me wrong, not all foods in the aisles are bad, just be sure to read your labels, keep the ingredients down to 5, and try increasing your shopping along the perimeter, and let me know what you find!

Just a little food for thought...

{7 Wardrobe Essentials To Invest In}

I believe in investing in essentials, as they are the base of your wardrobe. The thing about essentials as no matter what you put them with, they will always make an outfit come together perfectly. And if you buy pieces that are of good quality, you can literally wear them til there are holes in them and then just turn around and buy the same piece again. Below are 7 pieces in my wardrobe that I wear the hell out of {inspired by}. They are pieces that I have invested good money on and have only recently replaced because my old staples no longer fit...and that's a great thing!
 chambray shirt{Chambray shirt via Old Navy}
I wrote about this essential piece last week - everyone. everyone should own a chambray shirt. It's that staple that you can dress up and wear to work, or wait for the weekend and pair it with some black skinny jeans or leggings, and leopard print flats. Speaking of which...
leopard flats
{Leopard flats via Tory Burch}
I honestly wear these flats several times a week as they go with just about everything. Leopard print is something that is never going to go out of style, and an investment in some comfortable flats is essential!
v-neck shirt
{V-neck shirt via Madewell}
I bought a vintage gray v-neck shirt in LA and I love it! I wish I had one in every color, and while I've looked high and low for the exact shirt I have - this one from Madewell is a close second. Gray, comfortable, soft, casual, v-neck - you can't go wrong.
black blazer
{Black blazer via TopShop}
Now come on - if you don't have a black blazer in your closet - shame on you. Talk about the most wearable thing in my closet. You can wear it to interviews, business meetings, with boyfriend jeans on the weekends, or to carry with you to the movies in case the air conditioner is on blast. If you don't have one - go now. right now and invest in this piece.
gold watch
{Gold watch via Michael Kors}
Pretty much I don't leave the house without this watch. It's become a staple on my wrist and it's amazing how many people comment on it. Either - wow that's a really big watch, is it heavy? -or- I really love your watch, where did you get it
skinny jean
{Skinny jeans via Anthropologie}
I pretty much have abandoned my wide leg pants and for the most part only wear skinnies - and I have just about every color you can think of. I now have the luxury of going into pretty much any store and being able to fit pants off the rack - something that this time last year was certainly a chore.
stripes
{Stripe top via Jigsaw}
We have this board at work that houses some pretty memorable quotes and phrases me and my co-worker friends have said over the years. One quote I blurted out one day was "what??? stripes are everything to me" - while I admit it may have been a little dramatic, it's kind of true. At least a couple times a week you're going to see me in stripes - it's a staple piece that I wear alone and pair with other patterns...and you should too!

The word of the day today is: invest.

I Need A Boyfriend {Jean}

Clearly I'm on a spending strike, but since I really really...really need a pair of boyfriend jeans, do you think I can make an exception? I love boyfriend jeans mainly because they are super comfortable and all you need is a killer heel to make them instantly chic. I found a couple of pairs at Gap {here and here} that I'm going to try on this weekend {although I feel I need to distress them a little more}, but I'm still deciding if it's worth the splurge. What do you think?

I find myself wearing the same jewelry over and over again, and while I love my go-to pieces, I feel the need to switch it up a little. I've placed myself on a spending strike until...gasp...July, but once that strike {more like a challenge} is lifted I plan to pick up more than a few of these items, all which can be found and purchased here.

{Food For Thought Tuesday: 7 Foods To Avoid}

As you know I've been working towards eating more clean, and that means choosing fruits, vegetables, and meats that are raised, grown, and sold with minimal processing. Often they’re organic, and rarely (if ever) should they contain additives. But in some cases, the methods of today’s food producers are neither clean nor sustainable. The result is damage to our health, the environment, or both. I'm pretty solid on what foods I should be eating, and just recently researched foods that I need to avoid and this is what I found:
7 foods to avoid
1. Canned Tomatoes
The problem: The resin linings of tin cans contain bisphenol-A, a synthetic estrogen that has been linked to ailments ranging from reproductive problems to heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Unfortunately, acidity (a prominent characteristic of tomatoes) causes BPA to leach into your food. Studies show that the BPA in most people's body exceeds the amount that suppresses sperm production or causes chromosomal damage to the eggs of animals.

The solution: Choose tomatoes in glass bottles (which do not need resin linings), or Tetra Pak boxes available at Trader Joe's

2. Corn-Fed Beef
The problem: Cattle evolved to eat grass, not grains. But farmers today feed their animals corn and soybeans, which fatten up the animals faster for slaughter. More money for cattle farmers (and lower prices at the grocery store) means a lot less nutrition for us.

The solution: Buy grass-fed beef, which can be found at specialty grocers, farmers' markets, and nationally at Whole Foods. It's usually labeled because it demands a premium, but if you don't see it, ask your butcher.

3. Microwave Popcorn
The problem: Chemicals, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), in the lining of the bag, are part of a class of compounds that may be linked to infertility in humans, according to a recent study from UCLA. In animal testing, the chemicals cause liver, testicular, and pancreatic cancer. Studies show that microwaving causes the chemicals to vaporize-and migrate into your popcorn.

The solution: Pop natural kernels the old-fashioned way: in a skillet. For flavorings, you can add real butter or dried seasonings.

4. Non-organic Potatoes
The problem: Root vegetables absorb herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides that wind up in soil. In the case of potatoes-the nation's most popular vegetable -they're treated with fungicides during the growing season, then sprayed with herbicides to kill off the fibrous vines before harvesting. After they're dug up, the potatoes are treated yet again to prevent them from sprouting. Try this experiment: Buy a conventional potato in a store, and try to get it to sprout. It won't.

The solution: Buy organic potatoes. Washing isn't good enough if you're trying to remove chemicals that have been absorbed into the flesh.

5. Farmed Salmon
The problem: Nature didn't intend for salmon to be crammed into pens and fed soy, poultry litter, and hydrolyzed chicken feathers. As a result, farmed salmon is lower in vitamin D and higher in contaminants, including carcinogens, PCBs, brominated flame retardants, and pesticides such as dioxin and DDT. You can only safely eat one of these salmon dinners every 5 months without increasing your risk of cancer. Preliminary science has also linked DDT to diabetes and obesity, but some nutritionists believe the benefits of omega-3s outweigh the risks. There is also concern about the high level of antibiotics and pesticides used to treat these fish. When you eat farmed salmon, you get dosed with the same drugs and chemicals.

The solution: Switch to wild-caught Alaska salmon. If the package says fresh Atlantic, it's farmed. There are no commercial fisheries left for wild Atlantic salmon.

6. Milk Produced with Artificial Hormones
The problem: Milk producers treat their dairy cattle with recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH or rBST, as it is also known) to boost milk production. But rBGH also increases udder infections and even pus in the milk. It also leads to higher levels of a hormone called insulin-like growth factor in milk. In people, high levels of IGF-1 may contribute to breast, prostate, and colon cancers.

The solution: Check labels for rBGH-free, rBST-free, produced without artificial hormones, or organic milk. These phrases indicate rBGH-free products.

7. Conventional Apples
The problem: If fall fruits held a "most doused in pesticides contest," apples would win. Why? They are individually grafted (descended from a single tree) so that each variety maintains its distinctive flavor. As such, apples don't develop resistance to pests and are sprayed frequently. The industry maintains that these residues are not harmful. But experts counter that it's just common sense to minimize exposure by avoiding the most doused produce, like apples. Farm workers have higher rates of many cancers, and increasing numbers of studies are starting to link a higher body burden of pesticides (from all sources) with Parkinson's disease.

The solution: Buy organic apples. If you can't afford organic, be sure to wash and peel them first.

Just a little food for thought...

{Weekend At A Glance}

Morning Peeps! I hope everyone had a great weekend and happy Easter. Mine was absolutely fantastic and here's a little glimpse:
easter break weekend
We started the weekend off on Thursday with a pitcher full of margaritas at one of my favorite restaurants, Dos Taquitos. They make the absolute best margaritas and steak tacos - yum!!!

Friday was a day full of shopping, and my parents definitely did some damage. I on the other hand tried to keep control and found a couple of spring tops that I was in desperate need of. I have one more that I need to go and grab from Anthro this week - I should have just got it like my mom said... Friday evening we went out for crab legs - so delicious!

Saturday we went to the flea market, out for burgers at Chuck's, and then more shopping Later that evening we got some pizzas and brought them home and dyed eggs, and my mom decorated the table for dinner the next day!

Sunday we got up and my parents got me an Easter basket - and for the first time I surprised them both with a basket. They were really really surprised and loved them! We then went out to brunch at the NC Art Museum, walked around the museum, and then spent the rest of the day at home. My dad helped build me a new box spring {it's fabulous as the old one was very squeaky} and we did a lot of cleaning out closets and getting rid of a bunch of junk. Finally, we ate dinner at home and sat on the balcony enjoying the weather {and no bugs}.

Later this morning my parents are off to Asheville for a few days, and then will be traveling back to Ohio. We had such a wonderful weekend, and I must admit I loved having them all to myself - although I do wish my sisters would have been here. I adore my family!

{Trend Alert: Classic Chambray Shirt}

I think it's pretty safe to say that the chambray shirt has officially moved from a “trend” item to the new basic. It can literally be worn with just about anything - I wear mine with leggings, black jeans, white jeans (any colored jeans - really), skirts, over my dresses, thrown under a sweater with the sleeves rolled…and I could go on. How do you bring your own style to your chambray shirt (and don't tell me you don't have one)? Below are a few of my favorite styling ideas:

{April Picks}

It's the beginning of the month, so you know what that means....time for my April picks!!!
April 2012
1 - Yesterday morning I put on my white blazer only to find out that it is way too big and I have to either get it tailored, or purchase another one. boo...but yay!! I plan to live in it as having one in your closet makes your outfits so versatile. If you don't own one yet - get one!

2 - This is my new FAVORITE lip balm! I heard they sell it at Target, but none of the Targets around here have them, so I went straight to the source and ordered online. Love love love!

3 - I know you know this because I talk about it all the time - but I really really need tops. While my parents are in town this weekend, it's truly going to be my mission to find. If not - I'm just going to get these from Madewell.

4 - These shoes will be mine by the end of this month. Practical? No. But I want them and haven't treated myself to a new pair of impractical shoes in a while.

5 - I want to try this Bobby Brown body oil - have any of you tried it yet? I'm going to test it out over the weekend as I'm out shopping and will let you know the verdict. I'm liking the reviews so far though...

6 - Love these earrings from Stella and Dot - I'm ordering them today!

{Food For Thought Tuesday: Weight vs. Inches}

As I’m saying this to you – I’m screaming at the top of my lungs to myself trying to get it sink in that I shouldn’t worry about my weight, but instead of the inches and fat that I’ve gotten rid of. Because so many of us want to lose weight, at any given moment, most of us know how much we weigh. Most of us even have a favorite scale, the favorite being the one that gives us the lowest number possible. We talk about weight, think about weight and, sometimes, lie about weight, but how often do we think about what that number means?

For too many of us, weight isn't just a number but something that can actually change how we feel about ourselves. But, what does your weight really mean and how useful is it when it comes to tracking weight loss progress?

When you talk about losing weight, what you usually mean is slimming down. But slimming down doesn't always mean losing weight. It may sound odd, but it's possible to get thinner without actually seeing a change in your weight. This happens when you lose body fat while gaining muscle. Your weight may stay the same, even as you lose inches, a sign that you're moving in the right direction. But, if the scale doesn't change, you may not even be aware that you're getting real results. Knowing the difference between losing weight and losing body fat can change how you get results and may even change how you look at your own body.
fat
You now know that focusing on fat loss is much more important than focusing on your weight. When you lose body fat, you're making permanent changes in your body, shifting your body composition so that you have less fat and more muscle.

When you first start a program, you may need extra encouragement to keep going, proof that what you're doing is working and the scale may not give you that. Other ways the scale can work against you:

It measures everything: The number on the scale includes everything - muscles, fat, bones, organs, fat, food and water. For that reason, your scale weight can be a deceptive number.

It doesn't reflect the changes happening in your body: If you're doing cardio and strength training, you may build lean muscle tissue at the same time you're losing fat. In that case, the scale may not change even though you're getting leaner and slimmer.

It doesn't reflect your health: As mentioned above, the scale can't tell the difference between fat and muscle. That means a person can have a low body weight, but still have unhealthy levels of body fat.

It isn't always a positive motivator: If you step on the scale and you're unhappy with what you see, how does that make you feel? You may question everything you're doing, wondering why you even bother at all. Focusing on weight may overshadow the positive results you're getting such as fat loss, more endurance and higher energy levels.

Even if you're not ready to stop weighing yourself entirely, using other ways to measure progress can keep you motivated and help you realize that you are making changes, no matter what the scale says.

Go by how your clothes fit. If they fit more loosely, you know you're on the right track

Take your measurements to see if you're losing inches

Get your body fat tested

Set performance goals. Instead of worrying about weight loss or fat loss, focus on completing a certain number of workouts each week or competing in a race.

If the scale is making you crazy, taking a break from weighing yourself may just open your eyes to other possibilities. Your weight isn't the only measure of your success. Put away the scale and you may just see how far you've really come. Do you hear that Jessica???

{Welcome to six eighty eight}

Welcome to six eighty eight {formerly known as FLOURISH}!

Over the last year or so, I have been brainstorming new names that I not only wanted for my blog, but more importantly my overall brand. I wanted something that was personal – not a name that someone else was using and may confuse their blog for mine {or vice versa} – not a name that I found on a napkin at a fabulous hotel in Los Angeles {which is where I came up with FLOURISH} – but a name that had meaning and truly defined not only who I am, but where I came from.

How did I come up with six eighty eight, you ask? ‘688’ was the address number of my childhood home. It’s a place that I have the fondest memories. It was in that house that I started my passion for art and design, as at a very young age I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I loved decorating my room, and would redecorate it all the time to switch up the look. My friend Steven and I would build forts and dollhouses for my Barbies out of old wood that either his dad or mine had lying around. I remember building a wall shelf to showcase all of the figurines that I collected {and yes there were unicorns}. My friend Felicia and I would paint and draw on rocks and trade them every time we saw each other, along with special notes that only she and I could read because we had our on decoding system {man I wish I still had those}. There was a huge tree in the backyard that I would climb up high {with chalk in my pockets} and color the bark and branches {as walls and the side of the house were off limit}. I could go on and on with the memories, but as I was brainstorming names for my brand, I thought of where my inspiration early in life began. The moment I thought of my childhood home, I knew my new name would be six eighty eight.

My short-to-long term goal for six eighty eight {in addition to being my creative outlet} is to continue to provide you with daily inspiration and help encourage you to trust your own style via my blog. My long-term goal, is for six eighty eight to be a brand. I plan to restart my jewelry line, start an accessory line with my sister, and one day open retail shop – and yep you guessed it all will be named six eighty eight.

I am so excited about six eighty eight and all of the possibilities that are awaiting. I have truly enjoyed my journey over the last few years and love that I get to continue to interact with all of you on a daily basis. Thank you for your continued support – and look forward to new and fresh daily inspiration. The long haul required for blogging can only be driven by passion. When you're motivated by passion, you have an inner desire and inexplicable need to express your inner voice.
